Derek Dorris begins his sixth season at the helm of the women's basketball program after reaching the program's first Great American Conference Championships in teh 2016-17 season.
Dorris, who became the 10
th coach in the program’s history, took reins for the 2012-13 season. After starting the year at 4-7, the Crimson Storm went 17-3 over the final 20 games and won the NCCAA National Championship. Dorris was also named the NCCAA Coach of the Year. In the first year of play in the Great American Conference, Dorris' players set three GAC single-season records as Oumoul Thiam set the scoring record while Aminata Fall set the rebounds and blocks records. SNU also had its highest finish in GAC play at third. Fall then set GAC career marks in scoring, rebounds and blocks following the 2014-15 season.
Dorris comes into the 2017-18 season with a 60-75 career record. Last season he took the Crimson Storm to their first ever Great American Conference Championships. SNU fell in the first round 93-75 to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Southern Nazarene alumnus came back to SNU after spending the last two seasons at Southmoore High School where he was named the 2011-12 Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year. He led the Sabercats to the Area Tournament during the 2011-12 season. He began his high school coaching career at  Bethany High School where he was a five-time conference Coach of the Year and the 2008 OGBCA All-State Coach. He led the Lady Bronchos to six district titles, two regional titles and five area tournaments over nine seasons.
He earned a bachelor's in math education from SNU in 1996 and completed his master's in educational administration at Southwestern Oklahoma State in 2013.
Dorris amassed a 152-73 career record as a head coach at the high school level.
Dorris, and his wife Tiffany, have two daughters, Molly and Ava.Â
